Research Interests

My research project is to improve existing knowledge about the role of dimethylsulphoniumpropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulfide (DMSO) as antioxidant for phytoplankton cell and the impact of light intensity on the production and degradation of DMS(P,O) by phytoplankton in aquatic ecosystems. I will combine field measurements, laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling in order to (1) better characterize the production and the role of DMS(P,O) for different key phytoplankton species of the Southern Bight of the North Sea (SBNS) under different environmental conditions of light; (2) identify phytoplankton pathways of DMS(P,O) synthesis using molecular techniques; (3) better constrain DMS(P,O) production and related atmospheric dimethylsulphide (DMS) emissions in biogeochemical model.
